The Kokovay lab studies mechanisms that regulate adult neurogenesis and neural stem cell quiescence, activation, migration and differentiation. Neural stem cells are tightly regulated by the surrounding microenvironment. The major focus of the lab is to understand how different cellular compartments within the microenvironment influence neural stem cells under normal homeostasis and in the context of injury and aging. 

The vasculature is a known regulator of neural stem cells and we are studying how secreted molecules from endothelial cells regulate proliferation and migration of neural stem cells. We are also interested in the role immune cells play in regulating neural stem cell function and dysfunction seen during aging.
